The stock market is a place that connects those who want to sell their stock with those who want to buy it. Companies want their stock to sell in order to grow their business and make more money. When you buy stock in a company you are buying a portion or share of the company. Most investors buy their stock through a stockbroker who is trained and registered to sell stocks and bonds. Stock prices are always changing and they can be affected by a variety of different factors.

There are a number of variables that can affect the price of stock. The value rises when there is more interest in buying the stock than selling it. If people think the value of the stock is going to rise and they can sell it to make a profit, they will be interested in buying into it. Alternately, the price of the stock can fall if there are more sellers than buyers. The nature of the stock market is completely unpredictable. You can very easily make a lot or lose a lot and this is why many people rely on trained stock market advisors to help them invest.

If you have money invested in stocks you may be forced to sell your stock when the prices are down in order to get some of that money back. The longer period of time you have to invest the more likely you are to make a profit. Some companies do not trade their stock on the stock market but keep it in private hands. This type of stock is owed by shareholders who can sell only with approval from all shareholders. Privately handled stock may be riskier because you may not be able to buy or sell the stock when it is convenient for you and the investment amount is generally much higher than stock on the market. The more money you invest the more you can potentially lose.

Although investing in stock can be extremely profitable, recognizing good stock can be difficult. Unless you know your way around the stock market and are prepared to do extensive research you may want to turn to a stockbroker who can better advise you on your investments.
